Bone goes astray
BMP can induce bone formation (blue) in the wrong place such as muscle (pink). This can also happen in nature, in a rare genetic disease called Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. In many cases, injuries can cause joints to become permanently frozen in place.
Method: Hematoxylin and Eosin/Alcian Blue staining on murine muscle section visualized by bright field microscopy.
Feelings: Amazed to see it actually happening
Learning Outcome: Intramuscular injection of a small amount of BMP2 protein is sufficient to elicit ectopic skeletogenesis
